Vacation Close to Wildlife in Sydney, Australia
The “land down under” has many unique animals and beautiful scenery, making it an exciting vacation destination for kids and adults! Sydney, the most populated city in Australia, has a big city feel, proximity to the Blue Mountains, and tropical flowers that bring nature to this metropolis.
When visiting Australia, Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, and Darwin were all on my must-see list. As I recount my travels throughout Australia, I hope I can inspire you to explore this beautiful country and all its natural beauty.
To begin, let’s explore Sydney, “The Harbor City.”
Australia’s Location:
This large country, surrounded by water, is between the Indian and South Pacific Oceans in the southern hemisphere. A non-stop flight from San Francisco to Sydney is just over 15 hours; a long flight, indeed, but a destination well worth the trip.
The 5 best things to do on vacation in Sydney
1. The Sydney Harbor Bridge
Jogging, biking, and skating are prevalent on this 1.5-mile bridge. The bridge connects the northern suburbs to the Central Business District of Sydney (CBD). Views of the city, the South Pacific Ocean, and the Sydney Opera House are just some of the sights you will encounter as you walk across the tallest steel bridge in the world!
2. The Royal Botanic Gardens

Vibrant tropical flowers, rose gardens, palm trees, and a stunning view of the Sydney Harbor Bridge make up the Botanic Gardens. The Bin Chicken can be seen pecking around the grounds and annoying tourists while humoring locals and bringing nature to the city. Lastly, the Botanical Gardens are free to visit, making them accessible to everyone! So, take a stroll and stop to smell the roses in Sydney!
3. Take a Train to The Blue Mountains
Forty miles from Sydney are The Blue Mountains, approximately an hour’s drive or a two-hour train ride from Sydney (GoogleMaps, 2022). The best way to travel to The Blue Mountains is by train. The train runs at least once an hour and has stunning views of the mountains and surrounding landscape. Hiking The Three Sisters Trail and exploring the area of Katoomba were two of my favorite things we did on this day trip.
4. The Sydney Opera House

Although I did not attend an event at The Sydney Opera House, the proportions and harmony of this architectural structure are quite the spectacle. This masterpiece of the 20th century is not only iconic but also functional. Concerts, festivals, and, of course, Opera are performed using music as a medium to unite people across the world.
5. Chinatown
Smaller than N.Y.C Chinatown, Chinatown in Sydney is a fun place to experience one-of-a-kind art, taste tea, and devour amazing dumplings. Chinatown is near the rail station on the south side of the CBD district, making it easy to get to from downtown Sydney. Exploring Chinatown is a must-do if you love authentic Chinese food and Boba tea!
